The Java narrow-headed softshell turtle is one of two sub-species of the Asian narrow-headed softshell turtle (Chitra chitra) endemic to Indonesia, found in parts of Sumatra and Java. It is dark brown with light brown stripe patterns, a slender head and elongated snout, along with a softshell and it can grow up to 1.5 m! Found in rivers and streams of Java, it plays a crucial role in maintaining freshwater habitats by regulating prey populations and participating in nutrient cycling. While it is “Not Evaluated” by the IUCN, the Chitra chitra itself is “Critically Endangered” due to habitat loss and over-harvesting, pushing this species, and quite possibly, its sub-species, to the brink of extinction.
